Anchiskhati Basilica: hidden treasure in Tbilisi's old town

Among the cobblestone lanes of Tbilisi's old town, almost hidden between more recent buildings, stands the oldest Christian church in the Georgian capital: Anchiskhati Basilica. Built in the 6th century, it has survived wars, earthquakes and centuries of history.

History: the origin of the name and the Anchi icon

Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the basilica today takes its name from the Anchiskhati icon (the Christ of Anchi), brought from Anchi Cathedral in the 17th century to protect it from Ottoman invasions. The original icon is now kept in the Georgian Art Museum. The building was remodelled in the 17th century when the current bell tower was added.

Architecture and art: early Georgian Christian style

The basilica is an example of the longitudinal hall style of early Georgian Christian art:

  • Three-nave basilical plan with a semicircular apse
  • Walls of warm ochre-coloured tufa stone
  • 17th-century bell tower attached to the facade
  • Simple interior with a wooden iconostasis and wax candles

Anchiskhati in cultural life: Georgian polyphony

The church is home to the Anchiskhati Georgian polyphony choir, one of the oldest active choirs in the country. On Sundays and feast days you can hear the polyphonic chants — a UNESCO Intangible Heritage — echoing within its walls. A unique experience that goes far beyond the tourist visit.
