Chalaadi Glacier: trekking to the most accessible glacier in Svaneti

In the Svaneti region, where every valley hides an adventure and every mountain exceeds 4,000 metres, Chalaadi Glacier is the perfect excursion for those who want to see a glacier without being mountaineers. Accessible from Mestia on a 3–4 hour round trip, it is one of the most popular and rewarding treks in all of Georgia.

The glacier: features and access

Chalaadi Glacier descends from the summits of the Greater Caucasus on the slopes of the Ushba massif. It ends at around 2,000 metres altitude, relatively low for a Caucasus glacier, making it accessible without special equipment. The glacier front is impressive: a wall of several metres of blue and grey ice, with blocks of rock brought down by the glacier's movement piled upon it.

Like all glaciers worldwide, Chalaadi is retreating due to climate change. Photos from 20 years ago show the front far more advanced. Visiting it today is also a testament to the global impact of warming on these mountains.

The trekking route: from Mestia to the glacier

The starting point is the bridge over the Mestiachala River, about 2 km from the centre of Mestia. From there, the trail follows the river through a forest of larches and firs for about 5 km with moderate elevation gain. The waymarking is clear; the path is well-laid and suitable for families with children aged 8 and over.

  • Distance: 10 km round trip
  • Elevation gain: about 400 metres
  • Time: 3–4 hours round trip at a relaxed pace
  • Difficulty: moderate (suitable for beginners in good physical condition)

What to bring and when to go

The best time is June to September. Bring trekking boots (the ground near the glacier is rocky and uneven), warm clothing (it is cold near the glacier even when it is warm in the valley), water and food. There are no services along the route.

Mestia has several accommodation options (local guesthouses with full board) and restaurants where you can try Svan cuisine: kubdari (bread filled with spiced meat) is the typical local dish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a guide for Chalaadi Glacier?

No, the trail is well waymarked and easy to follow without a guide. However, a local guide enriches the experience with knowledge of Svan flora, fauna and culture. Guides can be hired in Mestia for around 50–80 GEL per person.

Can you touch the ice at Chalaadi Glacier?

The glacier front is accessible, but it is not advisable to get too close or touch the ice: glaciers shed blocks unexpectedly and the ground near the front is unstable. Enjoy it from the marked viewpoints.

How do you get to Mestia from Tbilisi?

There are direct flights from Tbilisi airport to Mestia (40 minutes, operated by Vanilla Sky in season). You can also get there by marshrutka from Zugdidi (4–5 hours) or by private car from Tbilisi (9–10 hours). The flight is the most comfortable option.
