Martvili Canyon: the natural wonder of Samegrelo where the river sculpted the rock

Over millions of years, the Abasha River has carved the limestone of Samegrelo into a canyon of hypnotic beauty: Martvili Canyon. Its vertical moss-green walls, its waterfalls tumbling into turquoise pools and the ability to explore it by boat make this one of the most photographed places in western Georgia.

The canyon: features and highlights

The canyon stretches for several kilometres, though the main visitor area is well set up with wooden walkways and boat jetties. The highlights:

  • Boat ride: the star activity. Rowing boats travel the narrowest and most beautiful section of the canyon (about 800 metres), with walls closing overhead and waterfalls dropping straight into the river
  • Waterfalls: several cascade down the canyon sides, creating curtains of water you can touch from the boats
  • Lush vegetation: giant ferns, moss and climbing plants cover the walls, giving the place the feel of a primeval rainforest

Historical and religious importance

Near the canyon stands the Martvili Monastery, dating from the 4th century, which gives the site its name. The combination of natural wonder and religious heritage makes the visit doubly rewarding. The monastery served as the seat of bishops of Mingrelia for centuries.

How to get there and what to know before you go

Martvili is 90 km from Kutaisi and 55 km from Zugdidi. By car from Kutaisi it takes about 1.5–2 hours. It can be combined with Mestia or the Enguri Dam on the route to Svaneti. Entry + boat: ~25–30 GEL. The best time is May–October; in winter the water level is high and the boat may not operate.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book the boat at Martvili Canyon?

No booking is necessary, but in high season (July–August) there may be queues of up to 30–45 minutes for the boats. Arriving before 10:00 or after 16:00 helps avoid the longest waits.

Do you get wet on the Martvili Canyon boat?

Yes, especially when the waterfalls are in full flow. It is common to get a little wet as you pass under the falls. In summer this is pleasant; wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and keep electronics in a waterproof bag.

Is there canyoning at Martvili?

Yes, local operators offer canyoning (gorge descents) in the more active sections of the Abasha River, outside the tourist area. This is an activity for those seeking a more adventurous experience.
